We aim to alleviate traffic congestion in metropolitan areas, enhance convenience and safety of intrcity transport, and resolve conflicts among local authorities, ultimately create seamless and sound metropolitan transportation system through cooperative governance.
About 80% of the Korean people live in metropolitan areas, thus MTC has five different regional branches including the capital Seoul-Incheon-Gyeonggi metropolitan area, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju metropolitan areas. Each area in itself has problems of congestion, accident, and environmental pollution and experience inconvenience during the commuting times between city centers and outskirts. Housing shortage and development of new towns increases the demand and aggravate serious traffic problems. The lack of relevant and prompt inter-city transport service across administrative boundaries aggravated the situation.
Delays in negotiations, caused by different opinions between local authorities regarding the methods of handling transportation demand and finance, propelled the creation of the Metropolitan Transport Commission and it became the control tower of metropolitan transport issues in Korea, under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. By resolving conflicts of interests between local authorities, the MTC will provide appropriate transportation network and services to secure livability and improve the quality of life of the metropolitan residences.
