Increase of users by 77% (160,000 in 2020 to 290,000 in 2021)
with survey showing 90.9% satisfaction of service

The Metropolitan Transport Commission (Chairman Baek Seung-geun, hereinafter referred to as MTC) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (Chairman Kwon Yong-bok) announced the result of the Alddeul (money-saving) Transport Card project in 2021.

Last year, all 17 cities and provinces in the country participated in the project with people using public transportation for an average of 38.9 times a month and spent 62,226 won in fares. With savings of 14,172 won (mileage accumulation of 9,419 won, card discount of 4,753 won), users saved up to 170,064 won a year (an average of 14,172 won a month), saving 22.8% of the annual public transportation expenditure.

The result shows that transportation cost savings were bigger compared to 2020 when users saved 20.2% of public transportation expenses with savings of 12,862 won per month (mileage accumulation of 8,420 won, card discount of 4,442 won.)

The analysis also showed that a user who lives in Seoul metropolis and commutes to Seoul saved up to 417,660 won last year, marking the one to save the most (in amount.)

Moreover, the number of Altteul Transportation Card users increased significantly, from 164,000 in December 2020 to 290,000 in December 2021.

As for the types of users by age, people in their twenties (44.3%) and thirties (31.6%), who are highly dependent on public transportation, used the cards most frequently (75.9%). The proportions of users in their forties (11.9%), fifties (8.6%), and sixties (3.5%) also increased, showing that the cards are used by diverse age groups.

The user satisfaction survey on 39,399 thrifty card users showed that the satisfaction rate with the project was 90.9% (very satisfied 55.6%, slightly satisfied 35.3%), indicating that the project is well received by users.

94.4% of the survey respondents answered that Altteul Transportation Cards are useful for reducing transportation costs, with 57.6% responding that the cards are highly useful. Users also stated that their frequency of using public transportation increased by 14% after they began using the cards (27.5 times → 31.4 times).

If the social-economic benefits from walking, cycling, etc. are converted into monetary values, a benefit of 78.3 billion won in total per year was accrued, as it was analyzed that the benefit compared to the cost (mileage 17.6 billion) was analyzed to be approximately about 4.4 times. MTC Head of the Metropolitan Transportation Fares Department Park Jeong-ho said, “The Altteul Transportation Card project in 2021 showed remarkable results in transportation cost saving, number of users, regions of participation and other areas.”

He added, “We will expand the number of regions in 2022 to more than 160 (137 in 2021) regions and the number of users to 450,000 (290,000 in 2021) through active promotion and services customized to each region. We plan to review various measures to improve user convenience.”
